  Murder, Says Jury in Gerbig Probe Kitchener Man Found Guilty at Inquest on Death of His Wife Special to the Toronto world - Kitchener, Ont., Jan. 4 That Charles Gerbig murdered his wife, who was found dead with her throat cut in the cellarway of her home at 18 Simeon Street here on December 1, was the verdict rendered by the coroner's jury empaneled in the case at the conclusion of the inquest here this afternoon. Coroner J.F. Honsberger presided. Many witnesses were heard. D.S. Bowlby conducted the hearing for the crown. The interests of the prisoner were looked after by E.W. Clement. Prominent in, the evidence heard by the jury was the testimony of Miss Elsele, superintendent of the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital, and Miss Carter, a nurse at the institution. Both nurses stated that Gerbig was received at the hospital as a nervous patient on November 24, and that he was discharged on Nov. 28. They declared that he was quite bright on the morning he left the institution. They also declared that his wife visited him while he was in the hospital, and that the two seemed to be on friendly terms. W.H. Knechtel, who discovered the tragedy, stated that when he found Gerbig in bed with his throat cut, the prisoner said to him: "Keep it quiet. Don't tell anybody. I'll be all right in a few days." He stated that Gerbig declared he knew nothing of the whereabouts of his wife. P.C. Steiner, the officer who was first summoned, told the jury that Gerbig denied having killed his wife, but admitted cutting his own throat, and explained that he had done so because he was despondent over poor health. The razor with which the attempted suicide was committed, according to Gerbig's own admission, and which contained a lock of woman's hair upon the blade, was identified by W.H. Knechtel and P.C. Steiner. From evidence submitted by neighbors the jury came to the decision that Mrs. Gerbig was murdered some time on Thursday, Nov. 29, after 10 am. Other evidence was given which showed that the domestic relations of Mr. and Mrs. Gerbig were not the most harmonious., because Mrs. Gerbig had remarked that her husband boasted of the attentions he paid to other women. Following the inquest the accused was taken to the county jail, where he will be held pending his arraignment in the police court, which, it is expected will take place tomorrow or Monday.
