Notes |
- Margaret Neufeld, 93, was part of local art culture
Margaret (Conrad) Neufeld, 93, of Canaan died Oct. 2, 2008 at the Geer Nursing Home. She was born Nov. 27, 1914, in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, where she later met her husband, artist Woldemar Neufeld. She graduated from Waterloo Lutheran College (now Wilfrid Laurier University) in 1937.
The couple married in 1939 and 10 years later they moved to New Milford, where they set up an art school and gallery on New Preston Hill Road.
Along with raising their four children, she hosted gallery exhibitions that became anticipated events through the 1960s.
In 1988 Woldemar and Peggy Neufeld moved to Whittlesey Avenue, where she lived until 2005. During this time she was a member of the First Congregational Church and The New Milford Trust for Historical Preservation.
In 1955, she acquired a teaching degree from Danbury State Teacher's College, now Western Connecticut State University.
She taught first grade at the East Street School and then second grade at the John Pettibone School and the Hill and Plain School until her retirement in 1982.
She is survived by two sons, Conrad Neufeld of Newtown and Laurence Neufeld of Warren, along with six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Woldemar Neufeld in 2002, a daughter, Julie Neufeld in 1979 and a son, Marc Neufeld in 2000.
Private memorial services will be held later this month at the First Congregational Church in New Milford.
