- FORMER GROCER HERE SUCCUMBS; ILL FOR MONTHS
Gustave Ante Manufactured Pickles, Horseradish in Hamilton
He Had Lived at Brighton Beach For Last Eight Years
A link with the days when the corner grocer formed one of the vital units in community life, was severed yesterday with the passing of Gustave Ante, a Hamilton resident for over 60 years. Mr. Ante was 76 years of age, and had resided at Brighton Beach Aldershot, for the last eight years. His name was associated with the grocery business and the manufacture of pickles. In 1914 he ran for alderman in ward 5.
The deceased was born in Preston, Ont., and at the age of 17 walked the railroad tracks to Hamilton. He secured a position as messenger boy with Grafton's Clothing company, and later was employed in the locomotive shops of the old Grand Trunk. At the turn of the century Mr. Ante opened his grocery business at Mary and Macaulay streets and manufactured pickles and horseradish in a rear building.
Sold Out in 1924
Until 1917 Mr. Ante operated the store, but the pickle manufacturing plant was not sold to Doug Gordon & Co. until 1924. After that time the deceased resided in Hamilton and moved later to Brighton Beach, where he was a member of the West Plains United church.
Mr. Ante was a member of the I.O.O.F. Excelsior lodge and the Dundurn Masonic lodge. He had been ill for the last eight months. Fourteen years ago his first wife predeceased him, and two years later he married Eva Crown, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Gus Ante, Toronto; Dr. I. H. Ante, Toronto; Albin Ante, Port Arthur; two daughters, Mrs. Fred Palmer, Detroit, and Mrs. Martin MacKenzie, this city. Two sisters mourning his demise are Mrs. Clara Powell, Alaska, and Mrs. David Guiger, Galt. Sixteen grandchildren also survive.
The remains will rest at the funeral home of J. H. Robinson & Co., limited, until Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be in Hamilton cemetery.
