Notes |
- Mel Weber was founder of athletic goods firm
Melvin (Mel) Weber, founder of Webco Sports Ltd., a distributor of athletic goods and equipment and for many years the "trophy king" of Kitchener-Waterloo, died Sunday at his home, Central Park Lodge in Kitchener. He was 85.
"His whole life was working," his daughter, Bonnie Jacob said Monday. Weber "He was your typical workaholic," she said, adding her father was a very popular man with a great sense of humor.
He had lived at Central Park Lodge since last September and prior to that, had been in a retirement apartment.
A native of Kitchener, Weber left the city in 1924 and served in the United States Air Force as an engine mechanic and parachute rigger for two years, hitchhiked home from California and married his childhood sweetheart, Sadie Dubrick in 1927.
After a stint with Fisher Body Co. In Detroit, Weber and his wife returned to Kitchener in 1932 and he started Weber Tire and Battery Co. on Duke Street, across from the Canada Manpower office. About 1936, he discontinued the automotive accessory business and acquired the sporting goods store owned by his brother, Fred, and Jack Penner. He moved it to a portion of the building now occupied by Cafe Mozart on Queen Street South.
During the Second World War years, Weber employed 12 women part time making service stripes, epaulets and insignia.
In 1966, he sold Mel Weber Sporting Goods to College Sports Ltd. and launched Webco Sports on Victoria Street South. The company moved to its present location at Victoria and Duke streets in 1980.
When Weber and his wife, who was office manager, retired in 1977, son Bill assumed the presidency.
Mrs. Jacob is secretary-treasurer; another son, Cameron, is in sales, and two grandchildren also work for the company.
Mel Weber also operated Webco Awards Ltd. for decades until 1972 when he sold the company to Larry Lee, a one-time draftsman at Raytheon Canada Ltd. of Waterloo. The company, now called Lee Craft, supplies trophies, shields, medallions, cups and ribbons to schools, fraternities, sports organizations, clubs and associations.
Weber was a member of Zion United Church, a charter member of the Kinsmen Club, a member of the Kiwanis Club and the Sales and Ad Club.
He is survived by two sons and two daughters. He was predeceased by his wife in 1987, three brothers and one sister.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 29, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Edward R. Good Funer al Home in Waterloo.
