Notes |
- WHITEMAN, ROBERT was a graduate of the University of Toronto in 1874. He practised at first in Shakespeare and Tavistock.
Der Perth Volksfreund November 29, 1878 had his card:
Dr. Whiteman Physician, Surgeon, & Accoucheur. Office over Lehman's Hotel, Shakespeare and in Zollners Pharmacy, Tavistock.
The New Hamburg Volksblatt on June 27 , 1906 reported that he had had a stroke. On August 8 they said:
Dr. George Ford has bought the practice of Dr. Whiteman of Shakespeare. Dr. Whiteman has recovered enough that he is able to visit his office every day.
He then moved to Berlin, some time between this date and October 10th. when he was reported visiting from Berlin.
The Berliner Journal on January 2, 1907 reported that a reunion of twenty former students of Albert College in Belleville was held at Dr. Whiteman's residence at 65 Duke Street.
Following the death of his wife in 1919 he moved to Winnipeg sometime between 1920 and 1922. He died there at the home of his daughter on May 3, 1924, at about 86 years of age.
He had some residual disability from his stroke when he came to Berlin. Dr. Allister Lackner recalled watching him park his car on Ontario Street, about opposite Goudie's Lane, and then making his way slowly down to the intersection at King St. After surveying the King Street traffic in both directions, he slowly went back to his car and briskly drove across the intersection.
He was survived by a son and four daughters.
(# Although the local newspapers reported that he retired to Winnipeg, the Ontario Medical Register for 1922 and 1928 listed him in Saskatoon. )
