- GENTLEMAN AND ATHLETE PASSES IN DEATH OF LAWRENCE BERGER
The Grim Reaper claimed Lawrence (Larry) Berger, popular and versatile Stratford athlete, at his home in New Hamburg. last Thursday night, his death occurring at 10.20 p.m.,, following an attack of pneumonia which developed from tonsillitis. He had been ill since June 14th on, which date he left Stratford, for his home. Gentleman as well as athlete "Larry" was deservedly popular wherever he was known but in Stratford particularly where he was one of the scintillating stars in the hockey firmament. He came to Stratford in 1918 after playing hockey with New Hamburg and the Kitchener Union Jacks and during the next two winters played on the Stratford Junior Hockey the Ontario Hockey Association. While his hockey reputation was practically a local one up until 1924 he sprang Into province-wide notice in the spring of 1920 when the Stratford Juniors lost the provincial championship to the fast sextette of the Toronto Canoe Club, as his speed. Was one of the features of the final games.
Larry was born in Tavistock, Ont and was the second son of Mr. and Mr J. J. Berger, now of New Hamburg. He was twenty-four years of age last January. During the first seven years of his life he lived with his grandfather, the late Lawrence Arnold who resided near Tavistock. His parents have lived in New Hamburg during the past twenty years while "Larry" has been in Stratford since 1918. He boarded in the city with Mrs. Rasey. 94 Nelson street, and was employed at the C. N. R. Shops.
Besides his parents he is survived by one brother, Clayton of New Hamburg who has played hockey for that town, and two sisters, Mabel and Marcela. Miss Mabel is employed at Wolverton while his other sister is a training at St Michael's Hospital, Toronto. The funeral was held on Monday morning ten o'clock from the Holy Family Church.
