Cancer claims second-generation owner of Len's Mill Stores
KITCHENER - When people met Bruce Menary, president of Len's Mill Stores, they were likely surprised to learn that the successful businessman was as comfortable unloading trucks or stacking store shelves as he was cutting $100,000 deals.
"To look at him, he was never flashy, you'd never know he was the president of 11 stores," said Bruce's daughter, Betty Menary, who worked alongside her dad as an assistant.
Bruce had been president of the chain since his dad, Len Menary, founder of the popular stores, died in 2007. Bruce died on Sunday at age 59 of liver cancer. He had been sick for about a year, although it took doctors months to make a diagnosis.....
After Len died, Bruce told a Record reporter "If I could get half the respect in the trade that he did, I'd be a very happy man."
Apparently, Bruce succeeded.
"My dad was a really well-respected businessman," said Betty. "One of the most common comments since his death have been 'he was a good man.' "
The chain will now be run by the third generation, Bruce's son Peter Menary, assisted by Betty. It is all about carrying on the family tradition, she said.
"It was his family legacy."
