- Obituary of Erich Von Milke
(September 17, 1928 \endash September 25, 2017)
Peacefully departed this life shortly after celebrating his 89th birthday with family and friends. Dear son of Theophil and Elsa (Sperber) Milke of Bottrop, Germany, brother of Heinz and Helmut. He came to Canada in 1951 to start a new life. As a bricklayer and master stonemason, he found work in the growing construction industry in Canada, first working in Halifax, then Hamilton, Galt, and later in Waterloo Region. His specialty was fieldstone fireplaces and fieldstone veneer, and he left many fine testimonials to his work in Waterloo Region and surrounding area. Early on in his travels, he met Margaret Mary Snyder in a music store in Galt, Ontario, and they married on February 13, 1954. Soon after they were married, they bought the Snyder farm on Middlebrook road from Margaret's parents and shared many of life's adventures together until Margaret passed away in 2008. Besides doing masonry work, he was also a hobby farmer for a few years, and kept a few cattle, ponies and horses. As the "castle builder of West Montrose", he worked for many years on a fieldstone castle which remains as a monument to his dedication and love for the "old country" and is truly an expression of idealism and individualism. In his retirement years he pursued his hobby of family genealogy, researching family history for friends as well as his own family. In 2015 he moved to Trinity Village in Kitchener, where he received excellent care from the nurses and health care staff. He is survived by his two daughters, Carolyn Snyder Milke and Tatjana Christina Parniak, grandson Alexander Parniak and brother Helmut Milke (Ingrid) of Bottrop, Germany. A family interment has taken place beside his wife Margaret at West Montrose Church Cemetery. A memorial visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2017 from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, 62 Arthur St. S., Elmira, with reception to follow. In Erich's memory, donations to Children's Wish Foundation of Canada or Alzheimer Society Waterloo Wellington would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
