  • Notes
    • From the Bruce County Genealogical Society:

Protasies Flach was born in Germany, he was married to Magdalena Linsemann and they had two sons: Simon and John, and one daughter, Theresa, when they emigrated to Waterloo County, Canada, in 1840.

When the Huron District Opened up many German settlers of Waterloo County came to the Brant Township area.
He took out the Crown patent for lot 2, concession 2 SDR, Brant Township, in 1858. The barn on this lot still stands* on what is known as Flach's Hill and was the first bank barn with a stone foundation built in the district in 1855. The original log house was located to the north west
      of the barn.

Simon, who owned land in Carrick Township [a township adjacent to Brant Twnshp], took out the Crown patent for lot 1, concession 2 SDR, Brant Township, in 1858. Protasies FLACH acquired lot 3, from a Patrick Braniff in 1861 for $650.00. Simon, whio was married to Catherine Schall sold his Brant lot 1, to his father in 1859 for $800.00 and later moved to Delisle, Saskatchewan where he homesteaded.

John Flach came with his father to Brant Township and upon his father's death on July 11, 1864, he acquired his father's land. He married Genevieve Reinhart and had thirteen children, seven of whom reached adulthood. They lived in the old family stone house on lot 3, which still
      stands today in good condition.

Albert Flach, John's son, bought the adjacent lot 4, concession 2SDR, Brant Township, in 1911, the patent for which was taken out in December 1868, by a William McIntosh. Albert took over lots 1 and 2 upon the death of
his father in December 1918, and worked lot 3, for his sisters, this later belonged to Joseph Flach, Albert's son. Albert Flach married Theresa Batte in February 1913, and they had four children: Genevieve, Mari, Joseph, and
      William.

Upon Albert's death in 1968 the land (200 acres which came to be known as Golden Acres Farm) passed on to his family. On March 9th, 1976, death claimed Joe in a tragic tractor accident on the farm. Golden Acres Farms was
one of the host farms for the First International Plowing Match held in Bruce County in September, 1976. In conjunction with the Plowing Match there was a farm improvement competition and Golden Acres Farms won an award for one of the most attractive farmsteads already improved.
In April, 1978, Golden Acres Farms was sold to John and Bernadine Terwood of the Netherlands. The sale was necessitated by the death of Joseph Flach in March 1976.

A note from Protasius' 3rd great granddaughter -

*The barn, unfortunately, no longer stands.
However, a Flach descendant has repurchased the land and the 'old stone house" is being restored to it's original condition - with the owners carefully researching the original style of construction and craftsmanship in hopes of duplicating it.
