• Notes

  BECHTEL (BACHTEL), JACOB was a German wundarzt; that is, he was trained as a surgeon rather than as a physician. He was listed in New Hamburg in the 1857 edition of the Canada Directory, but was there earlier. The notice in the Ontario Medical Register, referring to him as Bachtel, states. "In practice prior to 1st. January 1850." He may have been the person with whom Dr. John Scott had a consultation in 1839, describing him as a skilled wundarzt from the Huron Tract. His name is connected with patients attended in Carrick, Carlsruhe and Neustadt. He died at Mildmay on May 25, 1885, aged sixty three years. Doctors in Waterloo County 1852-1925 by Alexander D.
