- Was it murder or self-defence?
KITCHENER - Both sides agree that Hugh McColl struck roommate Kate Reid with a hammer on Jan. 2, 2015, but the prosecution alleges it was murder while the defence claims it was self-defence.
McColl, 63, of Kitchener, has pleaded guilty to indecently interfering with Reid's human remains but not guilty to second-degree murder.
In her opening statement to the jury on Monday, Crown prosecutor Sidney McLean said McColl struck Reid with a hammer with such force that it fractured her skull in multiple places.
McLean said Reid, 51, also suffered defensive wounds. Her wrists were fractured, her left pinky finger was broken in two places and the tip of her right pointer finger was "practically severed," the prosecutor said.
Reid died in her apartment at 10 Burn Pl. in Kitchener, near the intersection of Highland Road and Belmont Avenue. McColl was her roommate.....
"When Kate's teenage daughter called, looking for her mom, he said Kate had gone to New Brunswick and that he was just her roommate \emdash he didn't know anything," McLean said.
"He said these things while armed with the knowledge that he'd killed her and, in fact, her body lay just outside the front door of her building."
Later, McColl took Reid's personal belongings and moved out.
"He removed the baseboards from the living room and wiped blood off the walls," McLean said. "He even got rid of her cat."
But McColl left behind a bloody couch, she said....
