- Dr. Leslie W. Black died at Toronto Nov. 12, 1974 at the age of 74.
Leslie Wauchope Black was born at Paisley, Ont. Jan. 23, 1900.
He graduated in medicine from the University of Toronto in 1926 and did post graduate work in Toronto, New York City and Jersey City, New Jersey before joining the surgical staff of Toronto East General and Orthopaedic Hospital in 1932.
There he was chief of orthopedics for 25 years. He was a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in general and orthopedic surgery, and of the American College of Surgeons, and was a member of the Toronto Academy of Medicine. His professional career was ended 4 years ago by a cerebrovascular accident.
Dr. Black also achieved some fame as a marksman and a boxer.
He held the Canadian pistol target-shooting championship for 2 years.
In 1924 he won an Olympic bronze medal in boxing and in 1927 sparred with world heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey in a benefit match for war veterans.
In later years he coached Varsity boxing teams and acted as a judge in professional matches in Toronto.
Surviving Dr. Black are his widow Eda and his three sons.
