Notes |
- In 1927 or 1928 when Silver Fox furs were very fashionable, either as a separate skin stole or as a collar for coats, the Waterloo Fox and Fur Syndicate, rented land from Miss Elizabeth Beck, on the old Beck homestead, and built a fox-farm. The Beck homestead if the corner of Beck Street and Wilson Avenue. This farm had 300 pair of breeding-stock brought in from the Albert Lee stock in Summerside, P.E.I.
Herbert Ohlheiser, who lived in Doon, was in charge of the farm, not only feeding the foxes but pelting them as well. Each year he took a three-day course at the O.A.C. Guelph to keep abreast to the newer methods of fox-raising. The foxes were kept in separate wired pens and were kept very quiet when they had their cubs. The business flourished until 1947 when the food became more expensive and the fashions changed so the price of the pelts dropped, and the business folded.
