Notes |
- MCGILLAWEE, JOHN A. was born on a farm near Shakespeare. Following his preliminary education in local schools, he attended the University of Toronto, receiving his B. A. degree form University College in 1884, and his medical degree from Victoria University in 1888.
In 1889 thw Wellesley correspondent of the Waterloo Chronicle reported that he had purchased for $1,000 the practice and goodwill of B. E. Hawke. M. D.
The News Record of April 29. 1897 said:
Dr. McGillawee of Wellesley, who through ill health was forced to dispose of his practice at Wellesley, is staying at the home of his brother, James McGillawee, North Easthope.
Around this time he came to Berlin, and went into partnership with Dr. Minchen, at 62 South Queen Street. He later went into practice by himself with an office in the Canadian Block.
When Dr. Minchen died in 1909, Dr. McGillawee was appointed Medical Officer of Health, a position which he held until his death. Following a lengthy illness he died on February 13, 1924. He was survived by a brother.
The Daily Record said that he had performed his duties as Medical Health Officer conscientiously, and that he had many intimate friends who enjoyed his good nature and hospitality.
