Henry Hostetler Passes At Wellesley
Was Native Son of New Hamburg District
Following an illness of several weeks' duration death claimed Mr. Henry Hostetler at his home in Wellesley on Saturday January 27th, in his 88th year. The deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Moses Hostetler, pioneer residents of the New Hamburg district, who settled on the farm adjoining the village and now owned by Mr. John Ritz, in the early thirties of the last century. Of a family of seven sons and three daughters, he was the last of the sons and is survived by only one sister of the Hostetler family, Mrs. Emmanuel Hammacher, of Wilmot.
The late Mr. Hostetler spent his younger days in this district and after his marriage to Hannah Thompson, he settled on a farm near Wellesley village, which he conducted successfully for many years, retiring to the village about twenty years ago.
The deceased was a man of sterling qualities and of a friendly disposition and took keen interest in the affairs of the day. He was a member of the United Church.
The late Mr. Hostetler was a staunch liberal in politics. He had the honor of nominating the present Prime Minister, the Honourable William Lyon Mackenzie King, when Mr. King first entered on his political career as a candidate in North Waterloo, the late Mr. Hostetler's home riding, in which Mr. King was elected to parliament in 1908. Mr. King always referred to Mr. Hostatler as his political father.
His wife predeceased him 13 years ago, but he leaves one son, Frederick of Canfield, and one daughter, Mrs. Alex Chambers, of Wellesley, with whom he latterly made his home.
The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon with a public service at the home of his son-in-law, Mr. Chalmers, followed by internment in Rush's Cemetery, Wellesley Township. Rev. W. O. Mather officiated at the home and the gravesite. A large concourse of relatives and friends were in attendance at the funeral.
