Centenarian Says Long Life Is Due to Hard Work
Attributing good health and a long life to hard work, Mrs. Sophia Dedels marked her 101st birthday today at the home of her son, Edmund Dedels, 261 ½ Frederick St., where friends and relatives called to offer congratulations.
Although her hearing has become impaired and her sight is failing. Mrs. Dedels is still able to be up and around for a little while each day.
Skilled in the art of needlework, having completed three crocheted bedspreads and several quilts since her 90th birthday, the celebrant ex-pressed regret that she was no longer able to keep up this life-long hobby. "But I can still eat almost anything." she noted proudly.
Mrs. Dedels was the former Sophia Huber, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Huber. She was born in Preston where her father was a village blacksmith over 100 years ago. She attended school near Plattsville, where her family later took up farming.
Young Sophia, the second oldest child in a family of 13, was introduced to a domestic life at the early age of 12, learning to perform house-hold duties with pride and proficiency.
On Jan. 16, 1866, she married Frederick Dedels at Galt. Her trousseau included a pair of blankets wool she spun herself and which she still treasures. The couple farmed at Kossuth until their retirement to Breslau some years ago. Her husband died in 1924.
Their family included six children, only two of whom are living They are Mr. Edmund Dedels, with whom she resides, and Allen Dedels of Didsbury, Alta. Deceased are Jacob Dedels, Mrs. William Mader, Mrs. Allan Becker and Mr. Elmer Dedels. She has 26 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.
A sister, Miss Louise Huber of Kitchener, died three years ago at the age of 87 and a brother, David. died at 81. Mrs. Dedels is a member of Bethany Mennonite Church.

_______________
Sophia Dedels, 101, Passes Away
Little more than two weeks after celebrating her 101st birthday, Mrs. Sophia Dedels, 261 Frederick St.. passed away this morning following a brief illness. She observed her birthday on Jan. 8, when she appeared to be in good health, although her hearing and sight had been somewhat impaired by age.
One of the oldest residents of the district. Mrs. Dedels was born in Washington, Ontario, in 1845, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Huber, Her early life was spent in the Plattsville neighborhood where she attended school.
Second-oldest of 13 children. Mrs. Dedels outlived all other members of her family, and also two sons and two daughters of her own. Two other sons, Edwin of Kitchener, with whom she had been residing, and Allan of Didsbury, Alta., survive as well as 25 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
On Jan. 16, 1866, she married Frederick Dedels in Galt, and the aged woman used to like to recount that her trousseau included a pair of wool blankets which she had spun herself, and which she retained up to the time of her death.
The couple lived on a farm near Kossuth until retiring to Breslau, where Mr. Dedels died in 1924.
Mrs. Dedels attributed her advanced age and good health to hard work. She was a skilled artisan in the craft of needlework, and completed three crocheted bedspreads and several quilts after her 90th birthday, the hobby only being given up of late years.
Mrs. Dedels was a member of the Bethany Mennonite Church.
The funeral arrangements will be announced later. The body is resting at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home.
