    • Former Waterloo Fire Chief Passes

On Tuesday the flag was at half mast at the city hall.

George A. Karges, chief of the Waterloo fire department for 30 years before retiring in 1940, died on Thanksgiving Day at his home on Water St., Waterloo. He had been ill for some time.

A fireman since 1904, when he volunteered for service as a member of the Waterloo department, he served in Waterloo for several months, then moved to Stratford. In 1906, he returned to Waterloo and after four years of service was appointed chief.

The former fire chief saw the transition from hand reels to horses in 1906 and from horses to motorized units in 1927.

Mr. Karges retired in March, 1940. He was made an honorary member of the Dominion Fire Chiefs Association.

Born Oct. 27, 1882, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Valentine Karges of Josephsburg.

Surviving with his widow are three sons, George J. of Kitch- ener, Wilbert of Waterloo, and Walter at home; a sister, Mrs. Frank (Ida) Lawrence of Water- loo, and five grandchildren. Three brothers and three sisters predeceased him.

      The funeral was held Thursday.
