- WILLIAM HENDERSON PASSES AT AGE OF 81
William Henderson, 81, of 61 Dorset St., Waterloo, died at the K-W Hospital today after a brief illness. Founder of Henderson's Bakery in Waterloo, Mr. Henderson was an outstanding figure in the business, civic and church life of the community.
Born in Gardenstown, Scotland, he came to Waterloo in 1910. He was son of the late Peter Henderson and Ann Cruickshank.
Mr. Henderson served apprenticeship in the baking industry in Scotland and in Waterloo in 1916 formed partnership in a baking business with C. W. O'Donnell. This partnership continued to 1928 when Mr. Henderson and sons took over the firm.
WAS FORMER MAYOR
From 1921 to 1925 he served successively as alderman, reeve and mayor of Waterloo. From 1925 to 1949 Mr. Henderson held the position of chairman of the Waterloo PUC. He was specially honored for this service in 1950. He was a director of the Waterloo Trust and Savings Company and the Waterloo
Mutual Fire Insurance Company.
An honorary member of the K-W Rotary Club, he had joined the club in 1931 and served as president in 1936 and 1937. For years he had delivered the club's annual Robert Burns Day ad dress. In 1954 he was chosen as guest speaker for the Burns Day dinner of the Robert Burns Society of New York City. Mr. Henderson served as elder of Knox Presbyterian Church in. Water-loo for 45 years and at the time of his death was a senior elder.
For many years he was representative elder in the Guelph Presbytery. Superintendent of the Knox Presbyterian Church School for 28 years, he recently turned the sod for erection of the new sanctuary beside the present church.
FAMILY SURVIVES
His marriage to Margaret Mathieson, who survives, took place at MacDuff, Scotland, in 1899. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on June 8, 1949.
Surviving, besides his wife, are two sons, William, Jr., of Waterloo and Joseph B. of Kitchener; six daughters, Mrs. Gerald (Ann) Smith and Mrs. John (Eleanor) Beynon of Waterloo, Mrs. Ruskin (Margaret) Thompson of Toronto, Mrs. Roydon (Mabel) Start of Ingersoll, Mrs. Homer (Catherine) Bull of Rochester, N.Y., and Mrs. Arthur (Edith) Kearns of Guelph; one brother, George of Brantford; one sister, Mrs. James (Nellie) sang of Scotland and 22 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
One daughter, two brothers and nine sisters predeceased him.
Public funeral service will be held Monday at 3 p.m. at the Schreiter Sandrock Funeral Home. Rev. J. G. Murdock of Knox Presbyterian Church will officiate. Interment will be in Waterloo Mount Hope Cemetery. The body is at the funeral home until the service.
Expressions of sympathy will be accepted in donations to the K-W Rotary Club crippled children's clinic.
