- Woman charged in connection with death of 73-year-old in downtown Kitchener
KITCHENER A 73-year-old Kitchener man is dead and a 19-year-old woman faces a charge of second-degree murder in connection with his death.
Bernard Joseph Gallant was known as Pops to many in the downtown where he lived.
Waterloo Regional Police were called to his apartment above a convenience store on King Street West near City Hall at about 4: 30 p.m. Thursday after a report of an injured man.
Police say Gallant was pronounced dead at the scene.
Megan Birtch appeared in a Kitchener courtroom Friday afternoon, dressed in a blue pyjama pants and a blue Aeropostale hoodie.
Birtch softly said, "Yes," when asked by the justice of the peace if she was aware of the murder charge and understood the proceedings. Her parents were in the court.
There is a publication ban on details of the case....
Wendy Uebele of Kitchener was a good friend of Gallant and sat in court as the crown prosecutor read names of people Birtch can not have any contact with.
"My heart breaks for everyone involved here," she said after the court appearance. "Pops no longer has a family, a life."
Uebele described Gallant as a genuine person who helped others who needed it. He had been homeless in the past but had turned his life around, she said....
"He had his problems in life. He looked at life as everything was a gift," she said.
"I adored Pops," said Uebele, who was overcome with emotion when she spoke about him. "He would be the first person to help you."
Uebele said Gallant helped Birtch, who didn't have a place to stay. Uebele said the pair became friends and had a relationship.
"He took care of her," said Uebele, who last saw Gallant on Oct. 14. She had met Birtch a few times.
Uebele said the pair cared for each other and gave one another gifts.
"There was mutual respect for each other," she said.
Uebele said Gallant had recently reconnected with his son who was visiting from the United Kingdom during the summer. Gallant also has a daughter who lives in Halifax.
Uebele said he was estranged from his children for years and was excited about having a relationship with them....
