His father's family came from the county of Surrey, England. Bob joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in August of 1942 and trained to be a Radio Operator/Air Gunner. After almost 2 years of instruction in various locations in Canada he arrived in the U.K. on the 2nd June 1944. He continued his training at No.13 O.T.U. and joined No.226 Squadron (R.A.F.) on the 8th August 1944. The squadron was part of the 2nd Tactical Air Force, operating in support of the Normandy invasions. As the Allies advanced towards Germany, the squadron moved to France, operating in support of the advancing armies to the end of the war.
