    • Flash from the Past: Bridgeport Lofts site was a shoe factory

Some old buildings come down. Others are reinvented and put to ever more uses.

Last week's "mystery" photo isn't so old. It was snapped just over 10 years ago and shows the former Valentine and Martin Ltd. shoe plant at Bridgeport and Regina streets in Waterloo - today the Bridgeport Lofts apartments. ....Research by the late Ellis Little (for whom the Ellis Little Local History Room at the Waterloo Public Library is named) indicates construction of the building began in 1903 for a shoe factory a man named G.C. Raehr was to run.

But when that didn't happen, the site was sold to James Valentine, who had learned the shoemaking trade in his native Scotland. He started producing shoes in 1904 and in 1908 acquired a partner, Jacob B. Martin, previously the bookkeeper for a shirtmaker. ....The shoe business prospered and Martin became sole owner after Valentine's death in 1929. In 1938, he sold the firm to Greb Shoe of Kitchener, which until then was primarily a boot maker....1a
