      SOLOMON KAUFMAN.

You may imagine that I have made a sudden jump from Waterloo four or five miles into the interior of Oxford county. But as I had met Mr. Kaufman on a previous occasion and he being a native of Waterloo county, I felt a desire to call at the home of one of the largest land owners in the Province. I had the satisfaction of being well repaid for the time occupied, though not in a dollars or cents point of view, as Mr. Kaufman is not the kind of man who desires newspaper notoriety through financial remuneration. And here it may also be added that such is not the case in regard to any of the farmers I have visited. The object is to give the rural readers of the most popular paper in the county among the farmers something that is interesting and probably beneficial to many, and in this particular I have striven to avoid exaggeration invariably.

Mr. Kaufman lives in a brick residence convenient to the road on bis farm of 320 acres, but he has retired from farming, the farm being now under the entire management of his son, Albert E. Kaufman, and the fact that he thoroughly understands the handling of cattle and horses can not be disputed. He has for several years operated a creamery, but recently abandoned that branch, and has turned his attention to the breeding of thoroughbred cattle, his favorite breed being Polled Angus, and he lately purchased the splendid herd formerly owned by W. W. Ogilvie, of Montreal. If I am not mistaken there are about thirty-two in the herd, and there is not an inferior looking animal in the lot. The cows are exceptionally fine looking animals, and a number of them are first prize winners.

"Royal Blackbird," of Cregston, as to necessary points in a thoroughbred animal, is bound to be an easy prize winner. He is the individual which carried off third prize at the World's Columbian Exposition at Chicago. I also noticed three yearlings that are very promising animals, and will undoubtedly prove formidable rivals in the show ring. The grand dam of Royal Blackbird was sold for $2,300.

Mr. Kaufman's favorite stock, previous to his introducing the Polled Angus breed, were Jerseys. A number of very fine animals he has yet on hand.

The "King of Blenheim," a Jersey bull, four years old, has a coat as fine as silk. The latter, with a fine Jersey cow, he sold for a handsome figure a few days ago to Mr. Reid from near Berlin. He has several Jersey cows that average fifty pounds of milk per day. He has also a number of very promising Jersey calves. While his Jerseys are hard to beat, his herd of Polled Angus cattle will prove to be a profitable investment. He also has on hand quite a large number of fine stock cattle.

In his stable are a number of handsome horses, and in the lot is a blooded pacer that possesses all the points of a record breaker.

His stable room is 130x75, with stalls for one hundred head of cattle. All apparatus necessary for rapid and convenient feeding is supplied. A tramway is constructed through the entire length of the main gangway, and upon which a large trough on trucks containing the apartments needed for the different kinds of feed used, is propelled to any part of the gangway.
