- Demise of Mr. John McKie at Ripe Age
There passed away in Ayr on Sunday night, just half an hour before the incoming of the new year, an esteemed resident of this community in the person of John McKie. The deceased, who was in his 80th year, had been in declining health for several years, but the end came sooner than had been anticipated. He was born in Scotland, coming to Canada with his parents at the age of two or three years. The family settled near Paris. Here the subject of this brief memoir grew to manhood and here or in the immediate neighborhood he spent practically all his life, coming to Ayr some 12 years ago. Of a somewhat rugged constitution, he courageously faced the hardships of pioneer rural life and won out. Always of a modest, unassuming disposition, he never aspired to municipal or political preferment. In politics he was a Liberal and in religion a Presbyterian. A man of sterling integrity of character, and sound moral principles, he made many staunch friends and admirers. He married early in life, his wife predeceasing him some ten years. Mr. McKie is survived by a daughter, Mr. Jas. A. Daizell, of Ayr; also three sisters - Mrs. Mary Rutherford, Paris, Mrs. Jas. L. Roberts and Miss McKie, Preston. The funeral took place on Tuesday, from, the residence of his son-in-law, to Parise cemetery, Rev. J. J. Brown conducting the service, assisted by Rev. E. L. Roberts. The pallbearers were: Messrs. Thomas Hall, Geo. D. Black, Robert Morton, Duncan McPherson, and Samuel and Robert Faulds.
