Notes |
- Member of Pioneer Family, George Swan, Sr., Passes
A native of Ayr district and a lifelong resident of this community, George Swan, Sr., passed away ion K-W Hospital on Saturday morning in his 84th year. He had been hospitalized for two weeks, and was progressing favorably when he succumbed to a heart attack. The late Mr. Swan was born on the 10th concession of Blenheim on September 28, 1881, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Swan. At the age of five years he moved with the family to Manley St., Ayr. He entered Ayr Public School on the first day it opened, having previously attended classes in the church basement. Mr. Swan was a member of one of the early pioneer families here. His grandfather, also George Swan, came to Ayr in the 1830's from Quebec City, by way of Ancaster and built a home on Griffin's Hill on Swan St. The street bears his name. The late Mr. Swan was employed by the CPR for 37 years, retiring at the age of 65 after suffering a serious fall. He was a Presbyterian by faith and at one time sang in the choir of the former Presbyterian Church here. Mr. Swan was a valued member of Dolman Lodge, IOOF, and one of the prized possessions was a 50 year membership jewel which he received some years ago. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. G. Fluelling (Agnes) of Windsor and Mrs. R. Pelton (Isobel) of Port Credit, two sons, George of Galt and Moir of Ayr, a brother, James of Ayr, and eight grandchildren. His wife, the former Agnes Irwin, predeceased him in 1922.
The Funeral
An Oddfellow service was held at Coutts Funeral Home, Galt, on Sunday evening, attended by members of Dolman Lodge, Ayr, and Oddfellows from Galt. Murray F. Smith, Ayr, assisted in conducting the ceremony. Funeral service was held at the funeral home on Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Andrew Denholm of Paris. Entombment was made in Ayr Cemetery Chapel. Pallbearers were: C. F. Buck, Dr. I. H. Caulfield, Erb Clark and Jack Brown of Ayr, Balfour Johnston of Paris, and Lloyd Johnston of Galt.
