Notes |
- Norman W. Dance
Norman Walter Dance of Telfer Place, Paris, who was an auctioneer for over 50 years, passed away at his residence on Thursday, June 27th. He was in his 92nd year. Born on the 6th Concession of Blenheim, he was a son of the late James Dance and Janet Hall. After farming for a time, Norm took an auctioneering course in 1928, and for the next 50 years auctioned everything from cows to epsom salts. His first sale was for Billie Manson, the operator of the Ayr Telephone system. That first year, Norm told the News in a 1989 interview, he conducted 17 sales, and during the next 49 years aver-aged 135 sales a year. Over the years Norm conducted many of his larger sales in conjunction with other auctioneers including Marshall Wilson of Paris and Russell Lynn of Cambridge. He noted in his News interview that two of the best clerks he ever worked with were G. S. Dalrymple and Jack Brown of Ayr. In addition to farm and household auctions, he worked regular weekly livestock auctions at Stratford, Waterloo, Ancaster and Cambridge. Norm and his wife Margaret made their home in Ayr until moving to Paris in 1944. They were both active members in Paris Presbyterian Church. Predeceased by his wife, Margaret Lucy Hood in 1981; by his daughter, Donna Bryant; by one sister, Isobel Gibson; and by two brothers, Wallace and James Dance. Surviving are his daughter Carolyn and her husband George Rapp of Brampton; one brother Jack and his wife Bessie of Paris and five grandchildren. Reverend Pieter van Harten of Paris Presbyterian Church conducted the funeral service at the Wm. Kipp Funeral Home, Paris, on Sunday, June 30, at 2: 00 p.m. Interment in Paris Cemetery.

There passed away at her home, lot 2, con. 6, Blenheim on Friday morning, Sept. 16, a very estimable lady in the person of Mrs. James Dance, after a short illness of only about a week. - Mrs. Dance, whose maiden name was Janet Hall, was the eldest daughter of Walter and Isabelle Hall, Ayr, and was very highly esteemed by a wide circle of friends, who deeply sympathize with her sorely bereaved husband and family. The deceased, who was married in Blenheim in 1896 by the Rev. J. S. Hardie, the then pastor of Stanley-st. church, Ayr, was in her 37th year, and strangely enough the day of her death was the 14th anniversary of her wedding day, and the 13th anniversary of her eldest son's birthday. She is the third member of Mr. and Mrs. Hall's family that has entered into eternal rest within a period of slightly over two years - the others being Mrs. John R. Easton of Paris, and Mr. John D. Hall of Ayr. Mrs. Dance leaves a family of five - four boys and one girl. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon to Ayr cemetery, followed thence by a large concourse of friends and acquaintances. The services at the home and the grave were conducted by Rev. D. I. Ellison. The pallbearers were Messrs. James and William Scott, Charles Rafferty, Alex. Kennedy, Murdo McRae and Sheldon Stockton.
