- DIES like Pauper.
Samuel Chamberlain, Crimean veteran and recluse, who had lived in a cottage, with windows boarded,a mile and half from Galt for a number of years, and who died recently at The House of Refuge,Kitchener in his 88th year, was believed to have just obtained a living from his little garden and a pension of 25 cents a day. A search of the old house by members of the North Dumfries Council and solicitor to make an inventory of the effects, provided a real surprise. Victory Bonds to the value of $3,000,papers for $400 mining stock,a great quantity of tea and the following clothing, most of which was new and never been worn, was found:8 pair of woolen undershirts, and 8 pair of woolen drawers,11 pair pants,10 overcoats,16 vests,23 woolen undershirts and 26 coats, caps and hats. The clothing was sent to the House of Refuge and an effort is to be made to locate relatives of the old veteran.
