The founder of George Coppel Jewellers at 261 St. Paul Street never really retired, said his eldest son, Philip, who took over the business four years ago.

Mr. Coppel was raised in Galt. In 1941, he graduated from the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph with a degree in Agriculture (B.A.S), and began service as a Royal Air Force flight lieutenant in the Second World War.

After the war, Mr. Coppel earned a second science degree a Master's at Michigan State University.

Mr. Coppel was a member of the Congregation of B'Nai Israel synagogue and past president and lifetime member of the St. Catharines Game and Fish Association.

Philip said his father was "an honest, straightforward person. He was very well liked ... he had time for people."

Mr. Coppel is survived by his wife, Sylvia, and by his sons and daughter-in-law: Alan of Vancouver, Brian of Toronto, Glen of Hamilton, and Philip and Carla of St. Catharines.
