  RUSSELL CLARE SHANTZ Peacefully on May 13, 2008 at Victoria Hospital, after a brief illness Russell passed away. Born April 12, 1908 in Elmwood, Russ was raised and educated in Winnipeg. Russ recently celebrated his 100th birthday, a happy occasion which was marked by a gathering of family and friends at the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg, where he has resided since 2002. Russ was predeceased by his loving and devoted wife, Dorothy Eleanor (nee Smith), nicknamed Doll and Dot ; his sisters, Alberta Findlay and Bessie Rea; his brothers, Harold, Gilbert (Gib) and Edgar; and his parents, Simon and Annie Shantz. Although Russ and Dot never had children of their own, they are survived by many adoring nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews to whom Russ and Dot were always very generous on special family occasions such as birthdays and Christmas. During their married life, they lived for many years in a home on Borebank Street, River Heights, then moved to McLaughlin Street, St. James and finally to an apartment in Kiltartan Towers, St. James. Russ was always a wonderful role model and mentor, much admired by his extended family. In his youth, Russ was a longtime member of the Winnipeg Canoe Club, participating in many sports, including golf, tennis, snowshoing and rowing. He and Dot were married March 27, 1943. Russ spent most of his career as a sales representative for Ekco in Western Canada. He was also an active Mason and served in the RCAF. The family wishes to express its sincere thanks to the nurses and staff at the Convalescent Home for the wonderful care provided in Russ' final years. Cremation has taken place. A graveside service, followed by a reception, will be held on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to the Redecoration Fund at The Convalescent Home of Winnipeg, 276 Hugo St. North, Winnipeg, MB, R3M 2N6.
