Notes |
- William Gillies Hall Passes - The death occurred at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, last Wednesday of one of the community's well-known residents, William Gillies Hall, aged 63 years. The late Mr. Hall, who was a descendant of one of the community's oldest pioneer families, was born just east of Ayr on October 1, 1902. He was the son of the late Thomas Henry Hall and his wife Sarah Jane Gillies. He farmed all his life on the family farm until retiring to Ayr last July. Under his ownership and successful management, the ancestral acres were expanded by acquisition of adjoining properties over the years to become one of the larger agricultural operations in the area. He was a member of Knox United Church here and a Past Master of Ayr Masonic Lodge in which he took a deep and active interest. Surviving, besides his wife, the former Mildred Lowndes, are three daughters, Mrs. J. R. (Wilma) Bolton of St. Paul, Minn.; Mrs. Jack (Helen) Paddle of Scarborough and Mrs. Ivan T. (Beth) Hall of Roseville; two sons, Thomas A. and John W. of RR I, Ayr; three sisters, Mrs. C. C. (Martha) Hill of Welland, Mrs. J. M. (Daisie) Witt of Yonkers, N.Y., and Mrs. J. Morton (Olive) Guthrie of Ayr. Six grandchildren also survive. He was predeceased by a brother, Alvin Marshall. - The Funeral - The largely attended funeral service was held on Saturday from the Coats & Son Funeral Home, Galt, conducted by Rev. D. E. Willis. Interment was made in Ayr Cemetery. Pallbearers were: James Perrin, RR 3, Bright; John Welsh, James Davis, Jack George, Douglas Maus and Robert Little, all of Ayr and district. On Friday evening members of Ayr Masonic Lodge conducted a memorial service at the funeral home.
