- WILLIAM S. RIDDELL
Highly Esteemed Resident of Community Passes in His 77th Year
In the death of William S. Riddell at the home of his son-in-law, Irvine J. Campbell, 10th concession of Blenheim, on Friday afternoon this community loses a well-known and much-esteemed resident.
Mr. Riddell, who was in his 77th year, had been in indifferent health for the greater part of a year. After being ill in the west for a number of months, where he was residing with his sons, he recovered sufficiently in September to make the trip back home. Here he was able to be about as usual for a time, but a week or so previous to his demise he was again taken seriously ill and gradually lost strength until the end came.
Born near Edinburgh, Scotland, he came to Canada at, the age of 18 and secured work in the Sprague's road section. Upon his marriage to Margaret Sudden, who predeceased him 17 years ago, he took up farming on the farm now occupied by John T. Taylor. Fifteen years later, the family removed to the farm now occupied by Bruce Dawson on the Ayr - Wrigley's Corners road. Here they resided for a further 15 years. Shortly after the death of his wife, Mr. Riddell gave up farming, and during the intervening period had been residing with his sons and daughters in this vicinity and in Alberta.
He attended Knox United Church and was esteemed as a good friend and neighbor.
He is survived by three sons and three daughters, as follows: Walter and Norman, Gleischen, Alberta; Henry, Viking, Alberta; Mrs. William Ritchie, ,North Dumfries; Mrs. Ivan R,. Hall and Mrs. Irvine J. Campbell. Blenheim. One son, Robert, was killed overseas in the great war, and another son. John. died in the west. He is also survived by two sisters and a brother Scotland and one brother in the west.
The Funeral
There was a large attendance of old friends and neighbors at the funeral, which took place to the Ayr Cemetery on. Monday afternoon. Rev. J. W. Currie had charge of the services, and Richard Baxter sang the beautiful hymn, "The Lord is My Shepherd." The pallbearers were: John W. Bell. Ayr; Lyon Findlater, Henderson Rutherford and William Ritchie, North Dumfries; Ivan R. Hall and Irvine J. Campbell, Blenheim.
