- SALE OF A WIFE.
An incident that at the time resulted in an almost endless amount of neighborhood gossip was the public sale of a wife by her husband for the small consideration of twenty-five cents. Calvin Pine, the husband, then one of the village tavern keepers, had grave suspicions that his lawful spouse was lavishly bestowing her affections upon one Spiker, a pioneer pedagogue [teacher], and desiring to sever their family relations without recourse to litigation for divorce, he concluded to sell out. Spiker was approached upon the subject and a deal made. At the appointed time Pine led his wife out with a halter to the middle of the road aud there in the presence of a number of the villagers handed her over to Spiker, receiving in exchange twenty five cents. The deal proved to be permanent, as Mrs. Pine lived with her new husband until his death. I understand she is still living at an advanced age. The incident occurred about seventy years ago.
