      Shantz, Lorne - On Wednesday, Aug 7, 1991 as the result of an accident. Lorne Shantz of Baden. He was formerly of RR 2 Baden, where he had farmed prior to moving to Baden. Lorne was born in Wilmot Township, 85 years ago, a son of the late David Shantz and the former Saloma Schmitt. He was a member of Shantz Mennonite Church. Lorne had served the church and the community in various ways, including; director of Mennonite Aid Union, Federation of Agriculture, Vesper Springs Manor and the Baden Chamber of Commerce. He had also been a Wilmot Township school board trustee and president of the Baden Seniors. Beloved husband of the former Ada Wismer, whom he married September 22, 1931; dear father of Ralph and his wife Dorothy of RR 2 Baden, Marilyn and her husband Laurence Martin of Scottsdale, PA, Clare and his wife Marlene of St. Agatha, Harold and his wife Judy of Milverton, and Doreen of Windsor. Sadly missed by 10 grandchildren; one brother, Stanley of RR 2 Baden; one sister Ilene Burkhardt of Kitchener; three sisters-in-law, Lydia Shantz of Baden, Elmina Wismer of New Hamburg, Maude Wismer of Kitchener. Lorne was predeceased by one brother, Walter; one sister-in-law Doris Shantz and one brother-in-law, Gordon Burkhardt. Friends and relatives may call at the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home, 291 Huron St., New Hamburg, after 7 p.m. today (Friday) and until Sunday at noon when transfer will be made to Shantz Mennonite Church for the service at 3 p.m., with Pastor Doris Gascho and Pastor Jim Loepp Thiessen officiating. Interment to follow in the church cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Shantz Mennonite Church Building Fund or the Mennonite Central Committee.

      Baden man dies in crash

      BADEN (Staff)- A Baden man is dead and his wife in stable condition after a car-pickup truck accident on Highway 7 Wednesday afternoon.

      Lorne Shantz, 85, died at the scene of the crash, police said.

      His wife, Ada, 82, who was a passenger in his car is in stable condition at K-W Hospital.

      Cambridge OPP said Shantz was southbound on Wilmot Township Road 16 and he had stopped for the stop sign at Highway 7.

      He then proceeded on to the highway into the path of a westbound pickup truck driven by Charles Miles, 36, of Tavistock. Miles received minor injuries. Highway 7 was closed for 2 ½ hours.

      Shantz was the father of two girls and three boys, including Ralph Shantz, the former mayor of Wilmot Township, said Wilmot Coun. Harold Schmidt.

      Shantz was a trustee of the Shantz Mennonite Church in Baden, a former school trustee and one-time director of the Baden and District Chamber of Commerce, Schmidt said.
