- Tobias K. Shantz, "was born April 10th, 1842. He is married to Mary Moyer. They reside in Berlin where he is engaged as a book agent. His family consists of eight children, namely: V Orpheus M., born May 24th, 1864, is engaged as receiving clerk with Carson, Pirie, Scott & Co., retail dry goods dealers, Corner State and Washington Streets, Chicago, Illinois. He was married, January 30th, 1889, to Cornelia, daughter of Samuel A. and Melvina D. Flagler of Ottumwa, Iowa, and has a family of one daughter named VI Ruth, born September 30th, 1892, at Morton Park, Illinois, V Etta, V Sophia, V Austin, V Franklin, V Arthur, V Florence, and V Herbert."

Tobias Shantz
Tobias Shantz, aged 83 years, died last evening at 11:45 o'clock. The late Mr. Shants was one of the district's oldest residents being born in Freeport on the site where the Freeport Sanitorium now stands, in the year 1842. After growing up he went to Port Elgin with his father where he learned the milling business with which he was connected the greater part of his life. After leaving Port Hope he moved to Conestoga where he was in the employee of Schneider Milling Company. In 1865 Mr. Shantz had a very interesting trip being one of those early pioneers to go to Missouri where he helped to survey the land there for the settlers. He married Mary Moyer, a school teacher from Port Elgin, in 1861. The late Mr. Shantz had been a resident of the city since 1885. He was a devoted member of the United Brethren church.
Surviving are his aged wife, four sons, two daughters, and one brother, They are O. M. Shantz and A. D. Shantz of Chicago; A. B. Shantz of Big Prairie, Alberta, and Frank A. Shantz, Miss S. E. Shantz, Miss Florence Shantz, all at home, Christian, Witaskawin, Alberta. One in-law Rev. Soloman Eby, Preston Road, also survives, The funeral will be held from his late residence 43 Schneider avenue Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Services will be held at the home with burial following in the Mount Hope cemetery.
