- Frank Schantz worked in the dry goods business, becoming a shareholder in the firm of Lang Tracey. A bachelor, having a "built-in family," he was civic minded, serving on the Kitchener Public School Board, the orphanage board and the board of the YMCA.

A man long active in Kitchener community life, Franklin Schantz, 88, of 43 Schneider Ave. died Monday at K-W Hospital. He was born Jan. 12, 1874, at Hawkesville, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tobias Schantz, and lived eight years in Conestogo before moving to Kitchener. He retired in 1931 from the T. Eaton Company Ltd., and was employed by the Kitchener Public Utilities Commission for about 15 years. Mr. Schantz was a member of Alma Street United Brethren in Christ Church, where he sang with the church choir. He was a member of the Harwood Bible Class. He served from 1933-1940 on Kitchener Public School Board, and in 1940 retired as secretary of the K-W Orphanage Board after 24 years. He was an active member of the K-W Philatelic Association, a member of the Waterloo Historical Society and a charter member of the K-W Field Naturalist Society. Mr. Schantz also served with the Boys Work Committee of the YMCA and also did nature study work at Paradise Lake Camp. He was unmarried. Four brothers and three sisters predeceased him. A niece and two great-nephews survive.
