    • Joe Barberis

Joseph (Joe) Barberis of Kirkwood, Stanley Street, Ayr, passed away in St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, on Wednesday, October 11th. He was in his 88th year. Born in England, he joined the merchant marine at an early age and travelled around the world. In 1924 he came to Canada, settling in Toronto where he managed a company. He moved to Ayr in 1947, later moved to Wolverton for a time, then returned to Ayr. He was first a bookkeeper and later managed Ayr Co-Op for a time. After leaving the Co-Op he worked as a bookkeeper for a number of Ayr firms including Sherk Sales and Service, Ayr Feed and Supply, Drumbo Transport and Robb's Mobile Feed. Mr. Barberis was an avid sportsman and in later years served as treasurer of several Ayr sporting organizations including Ayr Curling Club, Ayr Rockets Hockey Club and Ayr Blue Tops ladies ball team. It was not uncommon for Joe to quietly reach into his pocket back in those days for funds to help keep these organizations financially afloat. He also enjoyed lawn bowling. Survived by his wife the former Nellie Easton; special father of Bill Easton and his wife Sheila of Kitchener, Shirley and her husband Robert Watson of RR 3, Ayr; a sister Clelia Armstrong of England; nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Kipp Funeral Home, Paris, today (Thurs.) from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 1: 30 p.m. with Rev. George Saunders of Ayr officiating.
