- BURGESS, Joseph Donald Passed away in his sleep on the morning of Wednesday, July 13, 2011 in his 86th year. He resided at Doon Village Retirement Home for the past three years after leaving his home at Point Clark. Don was predeceased by his wife Audrey (nee Brewster). He is survived by his children, daughter Debbie Bestfather, son-in-law Alex, and their children Laura (husband Dany), Chris Bestfather (wife Isabelle), John Bestfather; and son, Joseph Burgess and his two daughters Abbey and Ashley. Don was an active swimmer and obtained many awards in B.C. and the U.S.A. while in high school. He was a Veteran of the Second World War in the Canadian Navy from 1943 - 1946 and served on the HMS Algonquin. Later, he worked in many jobs and eventually specialized in agricultural sales. While selling farm equipment, he became Canadian Sales Manager for Jamesway Co. Ltd. He worked for Palm Dairies Ltd. in Trail, Calgary, Fort William and Sudbury, and Glenburn Dairies in Vancouver. After his experience in dairy plants, Don moved to Alberta in 1956 to manage DeLaval Co. Ltd. in Calgary. In 1972, he started Jad-Vent Distributors of Ayr, Ontario which distributed agricultural equipment in Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritimes. He worked there until retiring to Lake Huron in 1990. Don and Audrey lived at Point Clark during the summer and wintered in St. Pete's, Florida. They spent their time walking, swimming and working in senior groups in both Florida at their condo and at the lake. In 2010, Don participated in the Senior Olympic Games in Kitchener and placed first in numerous swimming events for being the most senior swimmer. Relatives and friends are invited to share memories of Don during visitation at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home , 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Monday, July 18, 2011 from 11: 30 a.m. to 12: 45 p.m., followed by the funeral service in the chapel at 1: 00 p.m., Monday. A reception will immediately follow the service in the funeral home's Fireside Reception Room. Interment will follow the reception at Roseville Mennonite Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Trans Canada Trail or a charity of choice by contacting the funeral home at www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445.
