- Hembling, a "preaching appointment" (MC) in Woolwich Township, Waterloo County, ON. William Hembling from England homesteaded here about 1831. He was ordained deacon of the Mennonite Church in 1858. The North Woolwich appointment was first known as Hembling. It is presumed that services were conducted in his home before the building of the church in 1872. The meetings were listed at four-week intervals. About 1875 Hembling associated himself with the Mennonite Brethren in Christ movement. After the schism of 1889 the North Woolwich church was used exclusively by the Old Order Mennonites. The Mennonite Church (MC) built its meetinghouse a few miles south at Floradale in 1896. Early ministers were Abraham W. Detweiler (1828-1912) and Joseph Gingerich (1842-1912). Peter Bowman became deacon in 1876.

Notes |
- William Hembling, "the eldest, was born October 9th, 1818. After the decease of his parents he had his home with Isaac C. Shantz who then resided on the farm now in possession of Isadore B. Snyder. Here he had his home until he was married to Mary Derstein. After his marriage he moved to Wilmot Township where he was the possessor of a beautiful farm. From here he moved to Upper Woolwich where he resided for quite a number of years. From here he moved to Elmwood, Ontario, but now he has his home in Berlin with his daughter, Mrs. Gingerich. After the decease of his first wife he was married to Elizabeth Martin who died some years ago. With his first wife he had a family of twelve children...; and with his second wife there were five children".

Word was received here last Monday that Mr. Wm. Hembling formerly a citizen of Woolwich Township, and one of the earliest settlers of this district had died at Grand Rapids, Mich., at the home of his son-in-law Mr. J. Gingrich, who formerly lived at Floradale. The corpse arrived here Wednesday noon was met by numerous relatives and friends of the deceased who escorted his remains to the Mennonite Cemetery. Rev. "From page 77 of the account book, we learn that John [Gingrich] continued working at various factories in Grand Rapids until his "stroke of paralysis" at age 60 in January of 1908. On June 29, 1904 John Gingrich had gone back to Canada to bury the former deacon William Hembling. William Hembling had moved to Grand Rapids to be with his daughter and son-in-law and died there of paralysis and old age on June 27, 1904 at age 85. His remains were taken by train and he was buried in the Elmira Mennonite Cemetery, Woolwich Township. The costs of his funeral were listed on page 152 of the account book.
