Suicide in Waterloo Township
On Monday morning last, as we learn from the Berlin News, a well-known farmer, named Joseph Heckendorn, living two miles west of the Town of Waterloo, committed suicide. He was in the house at eleven when he went to the barn to feed his stock. At noon his wife called him for dinner but received no answer. She then went to the barn and to her horror found him hanging in the threshing floor the rope being fastened to the hayfork. He was 47 years old, well to do, and leaves a large family. The wife told our informant, that he belonged to the old Mennonites. On Saturday last he "converted himself," and having had a grudge against his brother-in-law, at Conestogo, couldn't rest till he had made up with him, which he did that Saturday evening. On Sunday he talked a good deal on religion. He said he wouldn't kill himself, but didn't think he'd live long. If he died they were not to worry, as he'd be safe. The wife thought his mind must have been unsound.
