  For Defrauding Creditors B. M. Winter of Berlin, Ontario., in Jail on Two Specific Charges. Berlin, Ont., Nov. 16 - Somewhat less than three months ago a new store was opened here by H. M. Winter, who called himself "The Poor Man's Friend." He had his stock hauled to the store in a procession, headed by the 29th Battalion Band. Almost every Saturday he had music by the band, to draw the crowds. To-day he lies behind the bars of Berlin Jail, where he was incarcerated yesterday, charged with defrauding his creditors. On Nov. 6th he assigned to Mayor Eden. A meeting of creditors was held on Wednesday, and after they had inquired into the state of affairs, and information was laid by J. G. Reiner, of Wellesley, before Magistrate Weir. Winter was taken to jail, being remanded till Nov. 23rd. There are two specific charges lodge. One that he did, some time before his assignment, with intent to defraud his creditors, dispose of a portion of his property to his son-in-law in Elmira and second accuses him of having on the day immediately before his assignment of his property to a party in Guelph with the intent to defraud. There are 32 creditors, with the liabilities being $6,280. The available assets are very small, the stock being bought by Brodrecht, of London, at 65c on the dollar. Winter states that the money which should be in evidence was lost by him in gambling. Hamilton Times 27 Nov 1899 pg 7 ___________________ Mr., H. M. Winters has made quite a sensation in Berlin with his departmental store. Since the opening a week ago reports say he has been doing a rushing business.
