  • Notes
    • Moses Hostetler, "son of Joseph and Maria (Yoder) Hostetler, was born in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, near Johnstown, January 12th, 1813. In the year 1834, he came to Canada. On October 26th, 1836, he settled in Wilmot Township, Waterloo County, where he was married July 5th, 1842, to Margaret, daughter of Isaac and Susannah (Kindig) Latschaw. She was born December 15th, 1814, and died March 3rd, 1887. Soon after their marriage they moved to lot No. 21, Wilmot Township, south of Snyders Road, a few miles north of New Hamburg. Here he still resides with his son, Levi, who has rented the old homestead. Mr. Hostetler was, in his days, one of the most successful farmers of Wilmot Township. He is much esteemed by all classes of the community for his kind, social and pleasing manners which have won for him numerous friends. His family consisted of twelve children"

      Death of Moses Hostetler

One by one the old pioneers of the township are being called away, and in the death of Mr. Moses Hostetler, which occurred at his home on Wednesday evening, August 26th, Wilmot loses one of its very earliest settlers, and also one of the few ones of these to remain. Mr. Hostetler reached the ripe old age of 95 years, 7 months and 14 days, and was at the time of his death the oldest man in Wilmot, and perhaps in the County of Waterloo.

The late Mr. Hostetler was born in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, on the 12th of January, 1813, and came to Canada in 1834. He settled in Wilmot township in 1836, when this part of the country was yet a dense forest, and with the ambition of perseverance, characteristic of these early settlers, he yewed out a home for himself adjoining the present village of New Hamburg, and transformed it into one of the best farms in the county. On this he carried on his agricultural pursuits and lived continually thereon until death claimed him on Wednesday last, covering a period of over 70 years. On the 4th of July 1842, he was married to Margaret Latschaw, and the union was blessed with twelve children, eight sons and four daughters, four of who predeceased him. They were Lavina, William, Moses and Matilda (Mrs. Jonathan Kropf). His wife died about twenty-one years ago.

The remaining children are: David, Christian, Levi, Mrs. Solomon Shantz, and Mrs. Emanuel Hamacher, Wilmot; Isaac, of New Hamburg; Daniel, of Berlin, and Henry, of Wellesley. The late Mr. Hostetler was in active service during the rebellion of 1837, and took part in several skirmishes on Pelee Island and in the western peninsula of Ontario. In politics he was a life long Liberal. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock, from his late residence to Christner's Cemetery.
