Notes |
- Killed in Action in Germany
L.-Cpl. John M. Hergott, of St. Catharines, has been killed in action with the Lincoln and Welland Regiment, presumably in the recent hard fighting for the German channel ports, his wife, Mrs. Anna Cahill Hergott, James street, was notified yesterday.
Although a native of the Waterloo area, Cpl. Hergott was well known in this area, having been on the Bank of Toronto staff for 15 years, several of which were spent in this city. He was born in Hespeler, educated at Hespeler separate school, and further at St. Jerome's College, Kitchener. During his residence in Kitchener he played hockey with the junior O.H.A. team.
Cpl. Hergott enlisted with the R.C.O.C. in October, 1942, and after being stationed at various camps in Canada, went overseas with the corps in June, 1944. After transferring to the infantry brigade he moved to the continent in October, 1944, and was in action in Belgium, Holland and Germany.
In a recent letter to friends in St. Catharines Cpl. expressed his pride at being attached to the Lincoln and Welland Regiment, headquarters of which are in St. Catharines, his adopted city.
The late Cpl. Hergott is survived by his wife, of St. Catharines; his father, John T. Waterloo; three brothers, Tpr. Carl Hergott, Canadian Tank Corps, Camp Borden: Sgt. Cyril Hergott, R.C.E.M.E., England; and LAC Marcellus Hergott, R.C.A.F., Saskatchewan.
At a later date, a funeral mass will be sung at St. Catherine's Church in St. Catharines.
