    • Tribute Is Paid County Pioneer

"Waterloo County has lost a man who at one time took a prominent place in municipal affairs and made distinct contribution to Industrial progress in this district." former County Clerk Samuel Cassel commented today upon the passing of Frederick Schaefer, whose death was reported yesterday. "Most of the younger people will have no recollection of Mr. Schaefer, but he played a real part in County Council 38 years ago."

Mr. Cassel, also veteran county activities, turned to an old publication in 1906 under the title "One Hundred Years of Progress in Waterloo County." showing a record of Mr. Schaefer's activities A sketch of him revealed that he was at that time the owner of the largest brick and tile yard in the county. His plant was located at Breslau and he was recorded as the owner of another brick business at New Hamburg.

"Mr, Schaefer was one of the county's pioneer industrialists and shortly after his entry into county politics he became the reeve of Waterloo Township," Mr. Cassel asserted, "As a member of the Council he was man of ideas and a strong proponent of advancement. He had been living retired for a number of years but up to the time of his death. although 94 years old, he retained lively interest in county business."
