  • Notes
    • Herman Kemkes was born April 3, 1836 in Prussia. He came to America via Boston in 1853 at age 17. His first wife was a Prost and 2 children were born, Henrietta and Johanna. Family #2 was when married to Myers, issued four children, Edwin Zephonia (1877), Elvarene (1879), Elwood(1881-died same year), Magdelina (1883). Family #3 was when married to Louisa Miller who bore Irvin (1885), Charles (1887), and my grandmother, Sylvia Leah (1889). I have pictures of him with all these children. He died in Hanover, May 22, 1917 and I have the card from his funeral service. He had moved away from Hanover to Saskatchewan after all the children were born, but returned to Hanover to die.

      __________________________

Born April 3, 1836 in Prussia. His first marriage was to Frederika Christina Prastu in 1868. This marriage produced Henrietta (1869-1934), Johanna (1871-1947) and John (1872-1930). His second marriage was to Magdalena Shoemaker Myers and produced Herman Elwood (1875), Edwin (1877-1960), Elvarena (1879-1965), Magdalena (1883-1941). Magdalena died in childbirth. He then married Louisa Miller (Muller) in 1884. She bore Erwin (1885-1908), Charles (1887-1925), Sylvia Leah (1889-1993) (my maternal grandmother), Katharine (1891-1980) and David (1895). Herman left his family in Prussia at age 17 because he left the Catholic church in which he had been raised, He continued a religious man throughout his life listing himself as Evangelical and Methodist at various times. I have had a relationship with cousins from children from each of the three wives although this took much research to straighten it all out. I have a picture of him with ten of the twelve children he fathered and who were being mothered by Louisa Miller at the time.
