- Joseph Boeckenhauer, who for nearly sixty years had lived in Wayne and Dixon counties, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. O. Peterson Thursday, November 5. Mr. Boeckenhauer, who for years: was prominent in county affairs, had reached the advanced age of 89 years and had been in failing health for some time.
He had been affiliated with the Masonic lodge, for over fifty years and the Masons were in charge of the funeral.services, which were conducted from the Peterson home Saturday afternoon.,
Interment was made in the Wakefield cemetery.
Joseph Boeckenhawer was born in Germany July 31, 1842 and came with his parents to Canada, when nine years old. In 1870 he moved with his family to Cuming Co., Nebr. In 1872 he moved to. Wayne, Co. and later to Wakefield. In 1890 he was elected County Sheriff of Dixon Co. and moved to Ponca, Nebr. where he served as sheriff one term. Three years later he moved to Newcastle, Nebr. where he served that town as postmaster for a number of years.
In 1905 he moved back to Wakefield and has lived in Wakefield since that time. He passed away November 5th at 11 P. M. at the age of 89 years 3 month and 5 days. He was initiated, passed and raised in Jordan Lodge No. 27 A. F. & A. M. at West Point, Nebr. and affiliated with Corinthian No. 83 A. F. & A. M. as charter member April 22, 1880. As the oldest member of Corinthian Lodge he was in possession of the Jordan medal at the time of his death. In 1928 he was presented a button by the Grand Masonic Lodge of Nebraska symbolizing fifty years of continuous membership as a master mason. He was a member of Haggai Chapter No. 39 R. A. M. here. He was ever faithful to the craft, and an active Brother in his lodge work until a few years ago when his heatlh failed.
