- Simon Snyder, 1846 - 1902
Simon Snyder was born in Bloomingdale on March 31, 1846. In 1864 he began as a clerk in his brother-in-law's store in Conestoga. A year and a half later, he attended Day's Commercial College in Toronto and upon graduation he briefly clerked with the Waterloo Mutual Fire Insurance Company. Snyder then apprenticed with druggist J.S. Hoffman and, with silent partner Moses Springer, purchased the drugstore in 1868. Five years later Snyder bought out his partner. Around 1889 Snyder, together with Henry Roos, purchased the furniture business of Reichert and Company and became the furniture manufacturer Snyder, Roos and Company. The partners also acquired the Schaefer-Killer Furniture Company in Waterloo and 1900 amalgamated the two companies with Canada Furniture Manufacturers Limited, a collection of some seventeen furniture companies throughout southern Ontario. Snyder became the company's first president in 1902. Snyder's musical interests led him to become the first treasurer of the Waterloo Musical Society formed in 1882. He was also a founding director of the Dominion Life Assurance Company in 1889. Snyder served eight years on council from 1876-1879, 1888-1890, and in 1894 as reeve, prior to being elected mayor in 1895-1897. During his years in office as mayor, several water reservoirs were constructed for fire fighting purposes and a plan was developed for the municipality to purchase the Waterloo Waterworks and install a complete new waterworks plant. Public health issues were also addressed by council under Snyder and by-laws were passed governing the testing of milk and the inspection of slaughtered beef. Following his term as mayor, Snyder served one more year on council as an alderman in 1899, the year that the Waterloo Water Commission was established to construct the new municipal waterworks system.
