J. W. HOFFMAN, M. D. DETROIT, MICH.
Berlin Boys at home and abroad are proving themselves to be of good metal. An Old Boy, who has raised himself to prominence by his own effort is Dr. J. W. Hoffman of Detroit. Born in Berlin in 1867, he secured public school education in Berlin and Waterloo, and entered the High School in 1881. After graduating from this school, he served three years in Mr. Snyder's drugstore in Waterloo and thereafter attended the Ontario College of Pharmacy at Toronto. Successfully passing, he decided to locate in Detroit, Mich., and did so in 189o. He followed the drug business there until 1903, when he was appointed City Pharmacist in connection with the Poor Commission, a position which he filled to the satisfaction of the civic authorities and is now in his fourth term, as such. During the years which preceeded this appointment and while carrying on a drug business, Mr. Hoffman took up the study of medicine, and graduated as M. D. in 1901. Truly a creditable performance. It shows that Dr. Hoffman is a worthy son of an honored Waterloo county family.
