  • Notes
    • MCALISTER, JAMES CLEMENS was born in Milton in 1861, a son of Rev. James McAlister, and a great grandson of George Clemens of Galt.

He was a graduate of Trinity Medical College, Toronto, in 1886. He came to Galt in February 1891 from Embro, where he practised for a short time. His card said that his office was at 27 Ainslie St.

In June the following year he left for Chicago, but returned in September after travelling in the States for three months. This time he practised from Dr. A. Thomson's office on Main Street.

He remained in Galt until the end of March, 1897, when he moved to Jerseyville. From there he eventually moved to Strathroy, and later to Hamilton, where he died on April 30, 1920. Of his three surviving children his son Harold graduated in medicine and practised in Hamilton.

The Weekly Reporter of May 6, 1920, said of him:

Dr. McAlister cherished the traditions of the old school and regarded his profession as a ministry of scientific knowledge to the ills of humanity, irrespective of reward, beyond the consciousness of duty well performed. He was always surrounded by those who were not only patients but friends.
