    • HOWELLS, GERTRUDE MAY of Rhinebeck died Wednesday at her home. Wife of the late Brigadier Edward Howells. Mother of Betty Giordano, Earl "Lee" & Edward Howell. Funeral services will be held Monday 3:00pm at the DAPSON-CHESTNEY FUNERAL HOME, 51 W. Market St.", Rhinebeck, NY. Calling hours will be Sunday, 2-4pm & Monday 1-3pm. Contributions may be made to the Rhinebeck Rescue Squad, 78 E. Market St., Rhinebeck, NY 12572; or The Salvation Army, 19 Pershing Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 or 35 Cedar St., Kingston, NY 12401.

      Gertrude M. Howells, Salvation Army officer

      RHINEBECK\emdash Gertrude May Howells, 94; a 35 year Rhinebeck resident, died Wednesday at home.

      Mrs. Howells was a brigadier with the Salvation Army for 33 years, retiring in 1963, She was active with the Salvation Army in both corps service and war service., under the United Service Organization and Social Services, She held various appointments in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New York.

      After retiring to Rhinebeck, she was in charge of the Salvation Army's charitable activities in the Rhinebeck area.

      She was an avid gardener. Born Nov. 22. 1903, in Galt, Ontario, Canada, she was the daughter of Robert J. and Julia Ann Krigner Gooding.

      On Sept it, 1923, she married Brigadier Edward Howells in Galt. Mr. Howells died Jan. 26, 1990.

      Survivors include two sons, Earl G. "Lee" Howells of Rhinebeck and Edward Howells of Lady Lake, Fla; a daughter, Betty Giordano of Escondido, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

      Six brothers and a sister died previously

      Calling hours are 2 to 4 p m. Sunday and t to 3. p.m. Monday at the Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, 51 W. Market St., Rhinebeck. Services are at 3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. John Koppenaal officiating.

      A private burial will be in Rhinebeck Cemetery
