Notes |
- Lucy Martin, "was born November 7th, 1824. She was burnt with her sister, Lydia, February 11th, 1827. The father was engaged in breaking flax and in order to have it perfectly dry, had it placed around the large fire-place in the kitchen. A spark from the hearth fire ignited the flax and tow in the room and in a few minutes the whole house was enwrapped in flames. The wife and youngest child had barely time to make good their escape while two of the children who were sleeping upstairs, were forgotten in the excitement and thus proved a prey to the flames were kind and willing hands could make any effort to save them."
Eby, Ezra E. (1895). A biographical history of Waterloo township and other townships of the county: being a history of the early settlers and their descendants, mostly all of Pennsylvania Dutch origin: as also much other unpublished historical information chiefly of a local character.
