- The Sorrows of a Family
One of our well-known and most respected families has been severely visited during the past week.
On Saturday afternoon last it was announced that Mrs. S. Eby, daughter of Mr. Thomas Sparrow, had died after a very short illness of inflammation of the lungs, and again on Tuesday the intelligence spread that Mrs. Sparrow had also passed away.
Mrs. Eby was well-known and respected in Galt. She was the wife of Mr. Peter Eby, formerly of Berlin, and came to Galt with her father and family shortly after the financial troubles of her husband caused him to leave Berlin. Mr. Eby occupied a very prominent position in the county town, and was a journalist of established reputation. With the late Wm. Davidson and some others, the speculative spirit of those days involved him seriously and as a last resort, he was compelled, like some others, who were primarily responsible for his difficulties, to leave the country. If we remember right but two sons are left, viz.: - our well-known townsman, Mr. Isidore Eby, and Mr. Albert Eby, of Buffalo.
Mrs. Sparrow was a very aged woman. From the early days of Galt she was one of our most respected residents. With her husband, the late Isaac Sours, who died about '48, and one daughter, the late Mrs. Whiting, the family for many years occupied a prominent position in our midst. Mrs. Sours then carried on the Woolen Factory where Galt Knitting Co.'s works now are, and by his industry and prudence amassed considerable wealth. Some years after his death, the deceased lady married Mr. Thos. Sparrow, who still in his 84th year survives her, in but feeble health, we regret to say. Her daughter, Mrs. Whiting, died a few years ago, leaving three daughters, who are prominent in all our church and charitable work. Strangely, an elder sister of Mrs. Sparrow's, who has been confined to her bed for many years by bodily infirmities, still survives her.
